Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
